Safety Tips For Outdoor Electric Grills
Outdoor electric grills can be great for summer cooking and entertaining guests. They are also great the rest of the year for healthy, fresh tasting meals. Steaks, burgers, vegetables, chicken wings, just about anything can be grilled up for a tasty meal. More and more people are discovering the ease of grills and the health benefits to grilling versus frying and other cooking methods that require food to sit in fats or oils.
Though convenient and perfectly safe, if not used correctly, they can present danger. Burning, electrocution and other injuries can occur. Here are a few tips to keep barbeques and anytime grilling safe.
First and foremost, always read your owners manual thoroughly. Follow all set-up and assembly instructional information correctly to ensure your grill is functioning right from the start. If you have any questions about the manual or do not understand something, call the manufacturer and get the right answers before you use the product.
Keep your grill unplugged when not in use and also before cleaning. Check the power cord, plug, connections and heating elements before each use. If you see wear or fraying, replace the parts before using the grill. Cracking in the element can present a serious fire hazard. Also, prior to plugging in or unplugging your grill, be sure all knobs are in the off position.
Do not use an electric grill in the rain. Like any other electrical machine, it becomes a hazard if wet. Do not submerge cord, plug or heating element in water. Check to ensure that the plug is dry before plugging it in. Further, electric grills should be connected to a ground fault interrupter (GFI) outlet.
After you have finished cooking on the grill, turn everything off immediately and unplug the unit. If you get into the habit of unplugging it as soon as you are done with it, you reduce the risk of forgetting to do it later. Since your grill is kept outside, animals may jump up onto it, attracted by the scent of your yummy treats. On a fluke, they could hit buttons or knobs and turn the grill on when nobody is home. So, play it safe and unplug it!
Never leave a grill unattended. That does not mean that you have to stare at the food while it cooks, but do not run to a neighbors house or take a shower while food is grilling outside. And when you do step away from the grill, be mindful of children or pets that may wander over to it. Grills are hot and can easily burn people or animals.
The heating element may stay hot for quite some time after the grill is turned off, so be sure to close the lid if there is one, and continue to monitor children and pets. Closing the lid will also prevent leaves from blowing inside and possibly catching on fire if the element is still lit. This also applies to grills that are still in use so be aware of airborne objects during windy days.
When used properly and carefully, outdoor electric grills can be a convenient way to serve up healthy meals. A summer gathering is enjoyable with everyone outside having a good time without the chef having to keep running inside to check on the stove. By just being careful with your outdoor grill, you help prevent injury and thus, everyone can have a good time.
